Established in 2017 by Bree and Leigh Attwood. Backwoods is an independent, family run operation, nestled in the heart of Yackandandah, Victoria. Our distillery is dedicated to creating premium, handcrafted spirits that capture the essence of the Australian landscape.

Backwoods is becoming a much-loved brand amongst Australians who appreciate quality spirits and we'd love your help to bring the Backwoods experience to new markets across the world.

All of our whisky malts come from a supplier that source their grain from local, independent growers and use sustainable agricultural practices. We are proud to be using 100% Australian farmed and malted grains.

Our gins feature botanicals are chosen to represent our favourite parts of Australia.

We source our native botanicals from Victorian suppliers, proven to be sustainable and respectful in their approach to native ingredient harvesting.

Backwoods is becoming one of the most well respected distilleries in Australia, taking home the trophy for Champion Victorian Distiller in 2024 and the trophy for Best Single Malt Whisky in 2022. This is alongside the multitude of medals for all our award entries.

For a small operation we have also been recognised on the world stage with repeated wins at prestigious competitions, such as the World Whiskies Awards, where we have been awarded Gold Medals and Category Wins in both 2022 and 2024.

In 2016, we packed up our young family and moved from Melbourne to the picturesque town of Yackandandah in the Victorian High Country region. Our dream? To establish a distillery and craft exceptional Australian spirits that would rival the best in the world.

Our distillery has an emphasis on crafting sustainable, locally-made spirits that represent the local landscape, aiming to create nostalgia for the Australian outdoors and spending time in nature.

Our sustainability efforts extend to our whole operations, we use solar generated power to run our stills, have installed a waste water recycling system, deliver our spent grain to farms and only work with other businesses that champion environmental sustainability.
