The results from the 2025 International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC) and we have exciting news: every spirit in our core range has been awarded a medal – and we couldn’t be prouder.
This was our very first time entering these prestigious international awards, and to receive such high recognition across the board is a huge moment for our small team in Yackandandah. To us, it’s not just a win for Backwoods – it’s a win for small-batch, Aussie-made spirits.
Here’s how our range performed on the global stage:
🥇 Rye Whisky – Shiraz Barrel
Gold Medal | 95 points
A bold expression of Aussie grain and red wine cask influence, this release has been a favourite at our distillery door and among whisky lovers across the country. The judges described it as:
“The nose reveals a delightful blend of honeyed aromas and toasted sesame, reminiscent of Danish rye bread. A structured palate unfolds with balanced oak, vibrant spire, and tropical fruit notes, leading to a smooth, peppery, nutty finish.”
🥈 Single Malt – White Oak Barrel
Silver Medal | 93 points
Crafted from 100% Australian-grown malt and matured in American oak that previously held Aussie corn whisky, this whisky showcases our signature house style: robust yet balanced. Judges noted:
“Aromas of yeast and apple crumble lead to a light, easy-drinking experience. The palate reveals ripe banana and nutty nuances, evolving into tropical notes, before a pleasant, crisp finish of orchard fruits lingers delightfully.”

Why This Matters
For a small regional distillery like ours, recognition at this level is more than just a pat on the back – it’s a powerful reminder that integrity, craftsmanship, and staying true to your story matter. Each of these spirits was distilled and bottled here in Yackandandah using 100% Australian-grown grains and native ingredients, and matured in our High Country climate.
We’re incredibly grateful to our community – from our grain growers and local collaborators to our loyal customers who support us in stores, online, and at the distillery door. You’re a big part of this win.
We invite you to try these award-winning spirits for yourself and taste what the judges experienced.
